You've reached an important inflection point in your life where you are questioning things. Seeing that the path you're currently on is not making you happy. This is actually great news. Many people waste their whole lives never challenging the foundations that define them or living to please others rather than figuring out what they truly want to do in life and boldly pursuing their dreams.
"Always be a first rate version of yourself and not a second rate version of someone else." - Judy Garland
Also, take comfort in knowing that you are not alone. Many people of all ages in life take a step back to re-assess. Fortunately, I'm seeing more and more friends and colleagues do this now than ever before. And many often do complete re-directs and choose unrelated, but way more fulfilling career paths.
Here's how I recommend you get unstuck:
1--Find out who you are: Go on a journey of self-discovery.
What makes you tick? What thrills you? What do you detest? What do you feel you've been put on this earth to do? What do you do for play? What did you love to do when you were a kid? What do you dream about? What are your secret talents? What would you do for free?
That's just a start. To figure out who you are, you've got to ask questions. And you've got to seek answers.
Disillusionment comes from fear. And fear is the root source of most problems. The main way to defeat fear is to take action.
Here are some book recommendations I think will help:
The Alchemist -- Paolo Coelho
Siddhartha -- Hermann Hesse
The Four Agreements -- Don Miguel Ruiz
Choose Yourself -- James Altucher
Take a week off from your job. Or a long weekend. Detach completely from your normal life. Look for retreats in your area you can go on. Meditation retreats, yoga retreats, heck--go camping if that's your gig. Go somewhere where you will be able to be quiet with your thoughts. Away from the distraction of the busy world around us and the screens we stare at all day. Take a break from Facebook and all social media. It will be there when you get back, don't worry.
Begin a journal. If you don't know where to start, answer some of those questions from #1 above.
Look for life coaches / therapists in your area and start seeing one. There might be deeper issues that are preventing you from feeling fulfilled. 1 on 1 therapy works for a lot of people. Ask whomever you meet with to give you work to do. If you want answers, direction and clarity you've got to work for it.
3--Seek peace from within, not outside yourself.
True happiness and fulfillment and inner peace all come from within. So that's where you've got to start your journey. Trying to suck satisfaction from a career, a partner, or cool stuff will leave you frustrated, dry and wanting. Inner peace will make you feel good, regardless of what's going on around you. Working to develop tools to deal with the inevitable bad things that happen in life will serve you your entire lifetime. And make living each day much more worthwhile.
Meditation and yoga are 2 practical tools I'd recommend trying out to help you get there. Find meditation centers and yoga studios in your area and go to a class. Try a few different ones out and see what works for you. It may feel unfamiliar at first but just go with it. To change your life you've got to change your mind and these practices will help you do it.
As Confucius says "A journey of 1,000 miles begins with a single step". So take that step--you can do it. And hey--while you're on your quest, have fun!
No one else is going to live your life for you. Nor should you live according to someone else's ideas of what your life ought to be. You are 100% responsible. So own it, enjoy it and please don't waste it. Make it meaningful.
